When Travelocity Hotels in Philadelphia Will Stop Calling Their Employees ‘Hotels’
- by admin
It’s a big deal for hotels to say that their employees are the “Hotels” in their name.
When I visited the St. George Hotel and Casino in Philadelphia last month, a sign in the lobby read, “Employees are our #1 priority, and our team members work hard every day to make the St Gains Casino & Resort your #1 destination in the Philadelphia region.”
That’s true: Employees work hard to make sure that the StGains Casino is the #1 hotel destination in Philadelphia.
But when the StGeorge announced the name change last year, some hotel employees were confused.
“The hotel didn’t really say anything to clarify what we were supposed to call them,” says one employee who was interviewed by BuzzFeed News.
“The hotel did say that we should call them the ‘Hotel’ when we see them.
I don’t think they really said that, though.”
And this wasn’t the first time the hotel’s name had changed: The hotel had been calling itself the St George Hotel for more than 30 years.
At the time, a hotel employee told BuzzFeed News that the company had changed its name because it wanted to better align with the community.
“They changed it because it was an easy way to get people to stop calling us ‘Hotellos,'” she said.
The St George did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
A spokesperson for the hotel did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BuzzFeed News about the name changes, but in a statement, the hotel said that “We are happy to provide our employees with the opportunity to learn more about their jobs.”
But some employees were upset by the hotel employee’s account of the name.
“We had a lot of complaints about our names and we were trying to figure out a way to resolve them,” said one employee, who asked that his name not be used.
“But the first thing they asked was, ‘What does that mean?'”
In other words, when employees say their jobs are the StGs, they mean that they are the hotel.
After the hotel changed its official name, the Stains said that it would be helpful for employees to get a more specific reference to their work: “We would like to provide an email address and phone number for all our current and former employees,” the company said.
“To assist in answering these inquiries, we would also like to include an email where you can request information about your employment status, as well as a reminder that your current status may not reflect the status of your previous employment.”
One employee, a bartender who asked to remain anonymous, said he was so frustrated by the name changing that he started a petition on Change.org, urging the hotel to change the name of its hotel.
“I want my coworkers to know that they aren’t the ‘Houses’ in our name,” the employee wrote.
“If I’m the one calling the shots, then my boss should be the ‘House’ and the manager the ‘Boss’ instead of the ‘Head’ and ‘Headman.'”
And a number of hotel employees expressed disappointment that they were being called the Stans instead of their names.
“This is just a shitty name,” said a bartender.
“When I work in the Stgains I don’t need to have a name that’s insulting.
It’s like, ‘My boss is the boss and the people working there are my employees.'”
Another employee, whose name was changed to be Joe, said the change had come too late.
“My coworkers are the ones who know what I do.
They know I have the money, the education, and they know I’ve worked my ass off to get to where I am,” he said.
And a former employee, named Alex, said that he was happy to see the hotel name change.
“Now that it’s just the St Stains, it’s really cool,” he wrote in an email to BuzzFeed News, explaining that the name Stans is “more respectful and respectful of our name, which is what we want to be.”
“I feel like I’m finally making my name in this industry a little more accessible,” he added.
According to the Stannis website, the hotels Stains are the largest in the city, with 2,500 rooms.
This year, the company announced that it is expanding into more cities, adding two new hotels in Las Vegas, Arizona, and Atlanta.
